March 20th, our first day of spring, will be here soon! The month of March brings out all the pests that hibernate, die off, or go into hiding during the colder months. Some pests from the winter stick around during this time, like mice, rats, roaches, etc. Other pests become a new terror to deal, like termites, mosquitoes, and ants.
Here are some important facts to note in March:
- Termite season is here, which means termites will begin building new colonies. Termites begin swarming in mid-late February and will continue swarming until late summer.
- Black ant activity ramps up during the warmer season. It’s important not to skip out on “spring cleaning” this year. Check out our deep cleaning checklist for your kitchen to minimize the chance of an ant infestation.
- The mating cycle for rats is starting. A female rat can have 6-10 babies at one time. This means their rate of infestation progresses much faster than most pests.

- Inspect the exterior of your home/business. This winter was not the kindest to Texas. There could be unnoticed storm damage to your home that is allowing easy entry for pests. Look for cracks/crevices, inspected window screens and weather stripping.
- Don’t skip on spring cleaning! Deep clean your kitchen and use this time to inspect the interior of your home for possible signs of pests.
- Don’t neglect the yard during your spring cleaning. Pick up debris, clean the gutters, and trim back any overhanging branches or vines that could give squirrels or raccoons easy access to your roof.
- Check for plumbing leaks. Pests are only after 3 things: shelter, food, and WATER. Make sure your house is not giving them free access to water through leaky pipes.
